About the Event
How often do people say exactly what they mean?Â
Probably not too often becuase of the obstacles that may stand in their way. Social conventions, other people in the room, fear of rejection or need to be liked - these are all common reasons that people (and characters) may not speak literally.
As actors, a big part of our job is investigating.Â
Like detectives, we work to discover the true meaning of our dialogue so that we can play a character's subtextual intention, going deeper than just reciting the lines. This is called the "subtext" and it is the underlying meaning or "the unsaid meaning". This results in a more layered and interesting performance with more complex characters, bringing the words to life.
Learn to infuse a performance with greater conflict, drama, passion, and meaning through interpreting the subtext of a script!
