"THE PRINCESS BRIDE" SYNOPSIS:
A fairy tale adventure about Buttercup, a beautiful young woman and Westley, her one true love. Westley is taken from Buttercup under tragic circumstances and returns to find and save her from marriage to an arrogant Prince. The adventure to save Buttercup and live happily ever after journeys from outsmarting kidnappers to battling monsters and fighting for his very survival, finally finding an unlikely group of allies along the way.
ROLES AVAILABLE: (all roles are open ethnicity and listed in no particular order)
- Buttercup - Female, 20s. The doe-eyed farm owner turned forlorn princess and eventual damsel in distress, Buttercup is Westley's true love. She becomes deeply depressed upon falsely concluding that Westley has been murdered, a depression that leads her to agree to marry Florin's dishonorable Prince Humperdinck. She is brave, quick-thinking, and very passionate.
- Westley (aka Man in Black) - Male, 20s. A passionate, handsome farm boy turned daring, fearless pirate, Westley is Buttercup's true love. He is taken captive aboard the ship of the Dread Pirate Roberts, where he learns to fence, fight, and eventually takes over as captain. He returns to Florin upon hearing of Buttercup's betrothal to Prince Humperdinck and fights to win her back. He is kind, fair, quick-witted, and brave.
- Vizzini - Male, 30s - 50s. A calculating but ultimately buffoonish crime boss from Sicily. He angers quickly and shouts constantly, and treats his subordinates poorly despite relying on their skills to do work that he cannot. Despite his claims of being the “brains” of the operation, he is quite dim-witted. (Actor will also play: Albino - Male, any age. Rugen’s assistant for his ‘pain experiments’ in the Pit of Despair. He is simple-minded and too casual for such an ugly job & Impresssive Clergyman - Male, any age. Performs the wedding ceremony with a most unique speech impediment.)
- Inigo Montoya - Male, 20s-30s. An honorable but revenge-focused fencer working for Vizzini to stave off his poverty and alcoholism. He spent 20 years studying fencing in preparation to defeat the six-fingered man who killed his father, whom he loved deeply. He is determined and incredibly skilled with a sword.
- Fezzick - Male, 30s-50s. Fezzik is an enormous man from Greenland working reluctantly as Vizzini’s hired muscle. Despite his hulking size, he is gentle and kind. He opposes killing when Vizzini instructs him to. He enjoys rhyming, and proves himself to have a huge heart.
- Prince Humperdinck - Male, 20s-30s. The conniving, cruel prince of Florin, Humperdinck arranges to marry Buttercup so that he may have her murdered and frame the enemy nation of Guilder for the crime, creating a reason to instigate war. He is intelligent but exceedingly dishonest and arrogant.
- Count Rugen - Male, 30s-40s. Prince Humperdinck's cruel-hearted right-hand man. He is also the six-fingered man who murdered Inigo's father 20 years ago. A coward under his cool exterior, he enjoys the pain of others. (Actor will also play: Assistant Brute - helps to clear the thieves’ forest as ordered by the Prince.)
- Miracle Max - Male, 80s. Max is a brilliant and wise-cracking miracle worker who lives in the woods with his batty wife, Valerie. He once worked for the King of Florin, until Prince Humperdinck fired him, shattering his confidence. (Actor will also play Yellin - Male 20s-40s. Prince Humperdinck's Chief Enforcer who heads the guards protecting the castle during the wedding but shows cowardice at the first threat of violence & King - Male, age 70+. Rules Florin with a kind heart, but is quickly aging, leaving much of the royal duties to his son.)
- Valerie - Female, 80s. Max's loud and demanding wife. She lectures him and doesn’t let him get away with anything. (Actor will also play: Mother - Female, 30s. Concerned for her sick kid, wants him to feel better, Ancient Booer - Female, 90s. An old crone who speaks a hard truth to Buttercup in a dream & Queen - Female, age 70+. Married to the King.)
- The Kid - Any Gender, 10. Laid up in bed, too sick to play or do anything other than play video games. A bit cynical and prefers video games over reading or using imagination.
- Grandfather - Male, 60s. Eternally youthful but also wise. He loves imagination and wants his grandson to experience the story of a lifetime.
